Fun facts about branded erasers
- The first erasers used to be bread
Before rubber was discovered in the 18th century, people relied on bread to correct their written mistakes. The original erasers were, in fact, round, moist, and de-crusted pieces of bread.
- Erasers were an accidental invention
An English chemist and natural philosopher, Joseph Priestley, discovered rubber in 1770. Following this event, the British engineer Edward Nairne invented the first rubber eraser by the end of the same year. According to Mister Nairne, he was looking for breadcrumbs when he accidentally picked up a piece of rubber instead. This incident led him to understand rubber’s erasing properties better.
- Erasers were not standardised in the early stages
In 1839, rubber was vulcanised for the first time. A gentleman named Charles Goodyear discovered a method that would turn the rubber into a durable material by curing it. Thus, rubber erasers were standardised from that point onward.
- Erasers work both chemically and manually
Erasers consist of sticky polymers. These polymers make graphite-infused particles of paper stick to the erasers every time we try erasing something. In a way, we can say that erasers resemble magnets to some extent.
- Erasers can have traces of volcanic ash
Most of us have used classic, pink-coloured erasers more than once in our lifetime. These types of erasers feature pulverised pumice and pumice is — volcanic ash.
- Modern erasers take advantage of vinyl
Custom printed erasers have come a long way since the invention of rubber. While some are made of synthetic rubber, most erasers take advantage of vinyl. Vinyl makes the modern erasers more flexible and durable overall.
